Google Profiles - Fad or Fab?

I've said it before - you have to be Google-tastic. Google recently added Google Profiles to every Google Search ... allowing you to achieve that Google-tastic-ness that you know you want.

Google Profiles are not new, but in the last few days, they have soared in popularity. Why? Google your name, now scroll all the way down ... Google has added anyone with a Google Profile to your search results with an thumbnail to boot.

There is not a whole lot that you can do with your Google Profile, but it is still a good idea to set one up. Go to: http://www.google.com/profiles and click on "Create My Profile" to get started.

If you don't already have an account on Google, you will be forced to create one here ... once that is done, you can begin setting up your profile. Keep your information "surface level" - no home addresses, phones or social security numbers please ;) Think about it this way if you are unsure, if you would put it on your business card, go ahead and put it in your Google Profile.

Here is what mine looks like, pretty simple, not a ton of info:

So ... fad or fab? I'm still undecided.

I'm Over Twitter

So I broke up with Twitter in March for a litany of reasons, but one reason stands out more than the others. Whenever something gets this much coverage, I tend to lose interest. I want the newest, latest, greatest thing that nobody else knows about yet. Kind of annoying I know ...

In this case, for now at least, I went backwards. I started building up my FriendFeed account (although admittedly it's still pitiful) and using FriendFeed for micro-blogging.

Cool things about FriendFeed:
1. You can add in all of your other site feeds. So, if you are involved with other social media sites for blogging, micro-blogging, social bookmarking, photo - video - music - book sharing, news services and most other status and/or sharing sites -- all of these feeds can be filtered into FriendFeed.

So what the heck does that mean? Well, it means that if I write a blog post in Blogger, add new photos to Flickr, write a review on Yelp, select a new song on iLike, add a new video on my YouTube channel, or bookmark a site on Delicious - all of these items will also post in my FriendFeed.

Any friends subscribed to my feed can see what I am up to at any given moment.

2. I can filter the feeds of my friends (or folks I am subscribed to on FriendFeed) to see only the specific kinds of updates that I want to see from them.

Translation ... if I am subscribed to a social media guru and I heart his blog posts but could care less about his Upcoming feed, I can filter that out to just see what I want to read.

3. FriendFeed will recommend "popular" friends of friends to you. You can also create imaginary friends that are NOT on FriendFeed, but use other social media services, so you will get updates when they post photos on Flickr or similar.

4. Create lists to categorize your FriendFeed pals - there are default lists (Favs, Personal and Professional), but you can also add your own.

5. Create a private feed room for a group in FriendFeed Rooms - share info, links, photos and more in your own room! Rooms are a great way to share information with a company group or even your family.

I'm so over Twitter. Let's see what pops up next ...

Social Bookmarking - Part 2

I had an agent really throw me off guard the other day when she asked me what "bookmarking" was ... in the traditional sense. My brain immediately went to social bookmarking until I realized what she meant. I started thinking how in the world does this person not know what bookmarking is??? I thought about it again today when I looked at the little note on my PDA with her initials and the word, "bookmark" and decided that traditional bookmarking is dead.

Traditionally, we bookmark a site when we want to go back to it - sites we need for work or just that we find interesting. Social Bookmarking gives us the best of both worlds. My bookmarks are all still listed when I open my browser each morning, BONUS - I can share links in a flash and my Delicious feed goes to my social networking sites so the agents can see what I am finding.

Two things to think about with social bookmarking: creating tags and sharing nicely. When you save a website with a social bookmarking site, you will need to apply "tags" to the site. These are just descriptive words that will help to identify and classify the sites you are saving. Then there is the sharing part ... share as much or as little as you want - send links individually or pull a feed into your social networking sites.

The coolest thing about social bookmarking is what you get in return. Loads of people are out there sharing sites with you too and you can access those quickly and easily now. Sites like StumbleUpon even suggest sites for you based on your interests!!!

There are loads of great sites for social bookmarking, here are a handful:
Delicious
StumbleUpon
Digg
Reddit
Technorati
