The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers 1800
online courses (woot!), aptly named MIT OpenCourseWare - complete courses with lecture notes, exams and videos on their MIT OCW website. The courses are free (double woot!) but you are highly encouraged to "donate" throughout the site. Now, don't rush on to the MIT site without reading this next bit ... The skinny:
1. The MIT OpenCourseWare is not the same as getting an MIT education. You will not be able to get a degree or even college credit - in fact, you don't even have to register to get started.
2. The courses are not exact replicates of MIT courses and you will not have access to the MIT staff and faculty.
MIT first launched OCW in 2001 and last year they published almost all of their courses and saw their site traffic jump to 2 million visits for a new monthly record. Courses range from the topics of Aeronautics and Astronautics to Writing and Humanistic Studies and everything in between.
Have kids in high school? Teach high school? Check out the Highlights for High School section for some wicked cool resources and even high school courses created by MIT students. FUN.
Some very cool things are happening online with open source offerings and this is just one! I promise, this will blow you away - don't miss out.
